Overview
Ankle sprains are one of the most common sports injuries, and without rehabilitation they often happen again. Heel and Achilles pain tend to build up slowly, often after an increase in walking, running or standing.
With a structured plan, most people get back to their usual activities without needing injections or surgery.
Symptoms
Pain and swelling after rolling your ankle
Heel pain that is worst with the first steps in the morning
Pain or stiffness at the back of the heel
Feeling unsteady on uneven ground
How we treat it
We assess your ankle stability, calf strength, footwear and how you walk or run. For recent sprains, we check whether you need an X-ray.
Treatment focuses on strengthening the calf and foot, balance training to prevent re-injury, advice on load and footwear, and a step-by-step return to sport.
Typical recovery time
Sprains usually 2 to 8 weeks; plantar fasciitis and Achilles problems 3 to 6 months
